Discover Klarstein’s Dutch Ovens & Cast Iron Skillets

Do you enjoy cooking on a campfire, why not try a cast iron Dutch oven or cast iron skillet? These pots look like standard pots, but they are much heavier because they are made of cast iron, which allows you to put them in direct contact with the fire and cover them with embers. A Dutch oven can also be used for long cooking in the oven or on a grill, and therefore it’s ideal for the preparation of stews and other recipes based on an even distribution of the heat.

On Klarstein you can find Dutch ovens and cast iron skillets, available in different shapes and sizes. They are also characterised by their strong handle, which can be easily grasped even when using gloves. In our online shop, you can buy a nicely crafted Dutch oven, including some spare handles, as well as cast iron skillet sets for the best frying and baking experience on an open fire.

How does a Dutch Oven work?

The Dutch oven is a three-legged, fireproof cast iron pot. There are large, medium and smaller versions, whereby the size is usually specified in inches. The cast iron skillet is heavy-walled and therefore has excellent heat storage qualities. A special feature of the Dutch oven is the option of placing glowing coals, usually briquettes, on the high rimmed lid. This way, the fire pot is not only heated from below and from the sides, but also from above. The result is an all-round heat supply effect that is similar to that of a stove. The cast iron pan or cast iron pot is either placed directly on the embers or hung on a hook over the open fire with the help of a tripod.

The fire pot can be used in many ways. It can be braised, boiled, roasted, and even deep-fried in the Dutch oven, as well as it can be used for baking too. The shape and size of the cast iron skillet, and thus its capacity, determine the types of cooking for which it is particularly well suited. If you want to cook dishes that require relatively low temperatures, such as soups or casseroles, you are better off with a deep Dutch oven than a shallow one. The shallower version, on the other hand, is better suited for short roasts and similar foods for which high temperatures are ideal. The fine tuning is then controlled via the briquettes.

Advantages when buying a Dutch Oven or Cast Iron Skillet

When buying a Dutch oven or cast iron skillet set on Klarstein, there are quite a few advantages to consider, such as different sizes and models, that can be used on an open fireplace, on a kettle grill or on a gas BBQ.

When using a Dutch oven or cast iron skillet for the first time, it usually contains a protective coating that must be washed off before it can be baked. The oil-rubbed pot is then heated with briquettes for about an hour until it is covered in a dark patina. Understandably, this smoke-intensive process should not take place inside the house. Over time, the Dutch oven that has been burnt in this way and is thus protected against rust will turn completely black when in use. Burning in also gives the fire pot a first-class non-stick coating.

Hot water and a non-metallic spatula to remove any burnt-on food residues are sufficient for cleaning. After cleaning, it is advisable to rub the pot with a little oil (for example, sunflower oil with a smoke point of over 200 °C). Under no circumstances should soaps or washing-up liquids be used on cast iron pots. These agents would damage the patina protective layer and deposit a taste in the metal, which would cause it to burn in again.
