Indoor Garden

Planting indoors? Let it grow with Klarstein smart gardens

A smart garden is, basically, a hydroponic greenhouse for indoor growing that brings the vegetable garden into every home and makes growing it child's play for everyone! A smart indoor greenhouse with LED lighting and automated irrigation system ensures the growth and development of your vegetables, herbs, fruit and flowers without even needing the classic soil.

Klarstein smart home gardens can be assembled and put into operation in just a few minutes. All you have to think about is supplying water and the nutrients provided when you are told to. In fact, with a few simple steps you can create a real smart indoor garden or "smart greenhouse" that will take care of our plants almost independently, from sowing to harvesting.

Our smart gardens strong points are the LED lighting and irrigation systems, based on the principles of the most advanced hydroponic cultivation, i.e. above-ground cultivation. The lighting is truly innovative as it is artificial and perfectly regulated and balanced in terms of intensity and amount of exposure so that the garden is ideal all year round, 365 days a year. The irrigation system often provides the essential nutrients along with the water to encourage sprouting and growth.

What is a smart garden?

If you haven't yet had the chance to admire one up close and enjoy its convenience, you might be wondering what the Smart Garden is and how it works for you. When you open the package of one of the many 'smart indoor greenhouse' models, you find yourself in a sort of open micro-greenhouse that is similar in some ways to a traditional pot, but is actually extremely innovative as it features some hi-tech elements such as LEDs and an integrated irrigation system for water and nutrients. Suffice it to say that this cultivation method is inspired by and successfully tested by NASA.

In many models you will be amazed at how little or no soil is required. In fact, the most modern hydroponic Smart Gardens already have everything the plants need, so they are perfectly capable of managing resources independently for up to weeks at a time.

What to grow with an indoor herb planter?

Planting herbs indoor with Klarstein smart gardens

Hydroponic indoor gardens can successfully and quickly produce almost any type of plant and vegetation. So we're talking vegetables, fruit and flowers, but above all aromatic herbs! In fact, the great success of Smart Gardens in recent years is due to the fact that they give anyone, even those who have no time, no knowledge or no "green thumb" the beauty of owning a small, perfectly vital, flourishing and productive garden, perhaps even in the service of good food.

Thanks to hydroponics and the warmth and light provided by LEDs, you are free to grow many types of plants and anything you like. Still, it is undeniable that everyone would love to have fresh Genovese basil, tasty cherry tomatoes, a handful of mint or a sprig of thyme on hand at all times! Choosing herbs makes it easy to manage plant growth and to enjoy frequent and continuous harvests.

All of Klarstein smart Garden's best models come with capsules that are designed to ensure that the plants are born and grow. Inside are the seeds with their growing medium and nutrients. Our smart gardens range from the smallest models to the largest formats, with multiple compartments containing one plant.

How to choose your smart garden

There are quite some features to look out for when choosing the best smart garden, such as the lighting system (which should always be LED to ensure a full spectrum of light), the irrigation’s type, and the tank’s capacity, the number of places dedicated to plants, the types and compatibility of seeds to choose from, the presence of a control panel or remote App, power and consumption. Finally, you should not overlook the dimensions and design, which is essential to understand where to best position your hydroponic greenhouse and how it will enhance our room as a piece of furniture. Let's start with the last elements mentioned.

Dimensions of a smart indoor greenhouse

First of all, let's consider that micro greenhouses for indoor hydroponic cultivation have been designed with the home’s needs in mind and allow anyone to grow their own relaxing green space even if they don't have a garden or terrace. For this reason, the maximum overall dimensions of one of these vegetable gardens are no more than 60 cm in length, 20 cm in depth and 45 cm in height. Below these dimensions, there is a vast range that offers solutions to suit all tastes. Of course, the larger the size of the smart garden, the larger the cultivation area at our disposal.

However, even the most compact solutions can give us pleasant green moments of immersion in nature. For this "recreational" function too, hydroponic gardens are a wonderful choice of modern and innovative furniture.

The design of your indoor garden

Precisely because of the innovative nature of the hydroponic technology that underpins this concept of domestic greenery, the aesthetics of these kitchen or desk vegetable gardens always appear modern with essential lines, smooth surfaces and relaxing shapes. Most models are developed with a parallelepiped footprint, basically the technologically advanced evolution of the pot with an elongated rectangular base.

Another exciting format is the frame format, whose structure reproduces the dimensions of a screen or a picture. This format is undoubtedly the most striking., as in this case, our green plants become the stars of the room because all the attention of our guests will be focused on them.

The most popular colours for the Smart Garden are essentially four: white, beige, grey and black. These colours are the most popular because they go best with the style of the interior of any home. We can probably say that the most popular indoor greenhouses are those with total white surfaces. If in doubt, white is always a safe choice, but the question arises: doesn't white get dirty easily? Even more so if there is soil in the pots, just imagine watering the plants. Nothing could be more wrong! These are concerns from another era when the only known way of growing plants indoors was to rely on heavy terracotta pots with saucers. Hydroponics involves the total absence of soil and, in some cases, reducing it to a minimum. Even in cases where the cultivation capsules contain a little soil, this is stored in special pots thatprevent even the slightest spillage. The result is a greenhouse that is always extremely clean and does not require any care because it is always functional and aesthetically perfect.

Even watering is a revolutionary moment, both in terms of quantity and frequency. All you have to do is fill the water tank when indicated, and it will be automatically distributed to the plants according to their needs, day by day. So you don't even have to worry that watering the plants will make the surfaces in the house dirty or wet.

Number of compartments and plants housed

Smart Gardens start with two compartments (the smallest ones) and go up to 9 / 10 in the most spacious models. It is good practice to have no more than one plant per compartment, allowing plants to grow correctly without overcrowding. As indicated in the instructions on the packaging, it is helpful to bear in mind the growth speed of the type of plants sown and the size of their foliage to assess which plants to place in front (the smallest) and which at the back (those which that develop more luxuriantly). If you wish to sow aromatic herbs and therefore destined to be harvested in part, remember that we can always prune them. This cultivation approach makes it possible to reinvigorate the plants themselves, harvest some of the leaves and fruit for culinary purposes, and at the same time make room for slower-growing seedlings.

Indoor herb planter with full spectrum LED lighting system

several aspects are essential if you want to expect to grow successfully and satisfactorily. One of these is undoubtedly the lighting, which must be designed specifically for this function. All the best smart gardens are designed to produce and manage the correct flow of light so that it is properly proportioned, positioned and adjusted in height according to the different phases of growth of the vegetation. The light must then be homogeneous to ensure the proper distribution to each plant housed.

All these cultivation needs are met with a unique LED lighting system. Keep in mind that these are not simple LEDs but lights calibrated to cover the entire spectrum of radiation necessary for plants. This is why there are LEDs in different colours: white LEDs promote rapid growth, blue LEDs increase yield, and red LEDs increase flowers and fruits. Even though the LEDs emit different colours, the result is a beautiful white light that is pleasant to use as a home lamp.

All models of indoor hydroponics greenhouses are programmed to reproduce a perfect day/night cycle, with 16 hours of light alternating with 8 hours off. For this reason, it is preferable to place the indoor garden in day rooms and avoid bedrooms so as not to be disturbed by the light. Alternatively, it is useful to choose lighting systems that can be set as you prefer but always bearing in mind the 16 hours of light/8 hours of darkness ratio.

Hydroponic irrigation system and reservoir

After the lighting system, the other very important aspect is associated with automatic irrigation. In contrast to traditional cultivation methods, here you do not have to worry about the frequency and quantity of water to supply to the seedlings. The basis of all micro home gardens is the water tank. Its capacity varies in proportion to the size of the greenhouse and the number of compartments to be filled.

The great thing is that our task is simply to top up the tank when we are automatically signalled to do so by the system, often with a flashing LED signal or a notification that appears on the monitor in some models. Consider that there are models capable of taking care of irrigation autonomously for several days up to over four weeks. This is another reason why a smart garden is the best cultivation solution if you have little time, do not know anything about gardening or are often away from home for work or holidays.

Smart garden products: selected seeds, capsules and compatibility

Depending on the brand, each smart garden suggests using its capsules and nutrients designed for them. With the purchase of the greenhouse, they arealready included in the cultivation kit. Depending on the plants chosen for the following years, it may be necessary to order new capsules. Klarstein smart gardens allow compatibility between capsules from different manufacturers and use seeds that you may have bought from elsewhere. Keep in mind, however, that the seeds, their possible growing medium and the nutrients offered by the individual brands are those which, more than others, guarantee a virtually certain success of sprouting, growth and development to the final harvest.
