Air Coolers

Klarstein air coolers:enjoy the refreshing power of water

When during the torrid summer days and the sultry sleepless nights you are looking for refreshment, an excellent contribution can be obtained from an evaporative cooler: this kind of device is still relatively little known, but it represents a valid, energy efficient alternative to a traditional air conditioning unit, especially when you need to cool a room that is not too large. Air coolers are conceptually very different from a fan in that it can lower the temperature just like an air conditioner or a portable air conditioner.

By choosing this product, you can benefit from numerous advantages. First of all, compared to a classic airconditioner there is a considerable saving in both purchase and electricity consumption. In addition, it only introduces healthy cooled air, which protects people from possible illnesses and health problems such as colds, coughs, joint pains and more. It does not require the support of a specialised technician for installation. Finally, as the evaporative cooler is a mobile device, you can easily move it from one place to another and use it alternatively in any environment. Let's find out in detail what the evaporative cooler is used for, how it works, and all the most important characteristics to consider before purchasing to choose the best evaporative cooler currently on the market.

How does an air cooler work?

An air cooler works using the principle of evaporative cooling. Using an internal fan similar to those of classic tower fans, air coolers move the air, giving you a pleasant breeze and introducing air with a lower temperature into the environment through the evaporation of water and ice. Air coolers are equipped with a filtering system ensuring that the fan's movement triggers the evaporation process, atomising the water and ice. The hot air passes through a dust filter that acts as an air purifier, and then through an evaporative panel that triggers the evaporation process of the water or ice contained in the internal cooling pads, generating an fresh airflow.

Air coolers do not need refrigerant gases or chemical components, which pollute the environment and add to the overall cost. All they needed is simply water or ice. These two elements are placed in an internal tank that can hold several litres so that topping up is not necessary. In this way, the device can operate for several hours or even a whole day.

Choosing your air cooler: important aspects

Not sure how to choose an evaporative cooler? The following is a series of insights and advice on the basic parameters to be considered.

Airflow rate and power

Klarstein Air cooler airflow

When choosing an evaporative cooler, the power of the cooler and consequently the airflow rate is of some importance. In general terms, the greater the power of the product, the greater the airflow rate. Before going into more detail, you should remember that the airflow rate is expressed in cubic metres, while the power is expressed in watts. The best approach from this point of view is to choose the power and air quality according to the rooms in which you want to use the cooler. From a practical point of view, the airflow rate and the power give us essential information on the capacity or, rather, the quantity of air that the cooler can regenerate in one hour.

In virtue of these characteristics, the cost of the cooler can vary quite considerably. On average, an evaporative cooler with a power of 100 watts has an airflow of about 1000 cubic metres per hour. To calculate the required airflow rate, the room's surface area must be evaluated and multiplied by the height, thus obtaining the room volume. Depending on the volume, it will be necessary to consider the airflow rate of the product you wish to purchase.

Tank capacity and autonomy

Air cooler thank capacity

Tank capacity influences the autonomy of the evaporative cooler: the larger the tank, the greater the autonomy of the device, which will be able to function correctly for a certain period. Naturally, when evaluating the purchase of this product, one must also consider that the data provided by the manufacturer are purely indicative, as much depends on one's habits and the operating modes selected. On the special display, usually present on the top of the evaporative cooler, the user can select the mode of use and the speed setting of the fans. Increasing the fan speed will result in faster consumption of the water or ice present in the tank so that the autonomy will decrease drastically.

You should bear in mind that a very thin invisible thread links all the various characteristics of the evaporative cooler. In this specific case, the autonomy is influenced by the size of the tank, which depends on the power of the device itself: the greater the power of the tank, the greater the autonomy at the same operation. Therefore, to choose and evaluate the various autonomies, you must also consider the power of the tank. The capacity of the tank usually ranges from a minimum of 5 litres to a maximum of 8 litres in the larger models. The advice is always to choose a product that offers a better capacity, which means you have to worry less about filling the tank.

Size, weight and portability

Evaporative air coolers are portable devices that can be easily moved from one room to another without any kind of problem and with the support of a qualified technician. This means that one of its strong points is its portability and flexibility of use. To make the device extremely usable from this point of view, the device's size and degree of portability must be adequately assessed. From this point of view, there are no significant problems.

Almost all of them are produced by their respective manufacturers in a compact format and do not create problems for positioning within a room. If you are thinking of constantly moving the evaporative cooler over a day from the kitchen to the living room rather than the bedroom, you will need to consider the weight and the presence of the four swivel casters. When evaluating the product, remember that transporting the portable air cooler from one part to another is further facilitated by the handles.

Functionality and programmes

Air cooler functionalities

The evaporative cooler usually has a series of controls at the top that allow you to manage all the functions and programmes foreseen by the manufacturer. When evaluating and choosing this type of product, one must also consider the types of functions and programmes available to be sure of buying a suitable product for one's needs and the environment that one wants to cool. First of all, this type of product allows you to choose at least three different modes of use. The first type is the normal mode, in which the user can manually select the fan speed to adjust the air jet. In this way, the rate can be increased or decreased as required. In addition, you can use the so-called natural mode in which the device works automatically, simulating the sea breeze.

If, on the other hand, you want to enjoy a certain thermal comfort during the night, you must opt for the night mode in which there will be a reduced speed from the fan and even less noise to allow a proper rest. There are usually other functions that could be just as important. For example, if you want to use the air cooler during a spring period when temperatures are high but not excessive, you can do this by using it as a classic fan. This function can be selected directly on display on the top or through the remote control that, in some cases, is offered by the manufacturer inside the package. When the fan function is selected, the cold water in the tank is not used, and therefore only the fan will operate.

In almost all models, a timer function allows you to program both the start of the device at a specific preset time and its shutdown. In some cases, there is a separate auto switch-off function that is activated automatically when the appliance realises that the water in the tray is running out. Finally, in some of the more advanced models, the so-called smart functions allow the evaporative cooler to connect and be controlled by remote devices such as a smartphone or tablet. With these functions, you can manage the cooler in terms of switching it on and off and adjusting the various functions. You can also check whether or not the device is compatible with some of the most critical and popular voice assistants such as Amazon Echo and Google Home.

To maintain the characteristics and efficiency of the evaporative cooler over time, it must be adequately maintained and cleaned. Generally speaking, it is necessary to periodically clean some of its internal components, particularly the valve, the tank and the filters. The advice is to choose a device that allows these three elements to be easily removed for cleaning. Cleaning is quite immediate and straightforward as you only need to use a damp cloth or brush with running water. All those parts destined for the evaporation process should also be checked periodically, perhaps carrying out a sanitising action from time to time to prevent the formation of mould over the months, which could represent a real health risk. Finally, it is an excellent habit always to use water with a low level of limescale to prevent any sediment from causing encrustations over time that could prevent the correct supply of water during the operation of the device.

Some of Klarstein’s air coolers rely on rechargeable batteries or can be filled directly with ice packs in order to provide cool air more efficiently and at a lower price. Because water evaporates during the cooling process, the warm air in the room can be humidified at the same time. Depending on the model, the humidifier can also be switched off, if required, so that the device can still be used even when humidity levels are slightly higher.

Air cooler vs air conditioner?

In many situations, an air cooler with water cooling is a cheaper and more environmentally friendly option to comfortably climatise a room. It does not require environmentally harmful refrigerants and works very efficient in direct comparison with an air conditioner. Especially when the air is dry (e.g. in the office), it is worthwhile to use an air cooler: the device cools with water and humidifies the air a bit at the same time - counteracting the dry ambient air and creates a healthier indoor climate. However, this also means that the devices may not be able to achieve the desired results at high humidity. If the humidity is too high, the air should ideally be additionally dehumidified, for instance with an air conditioner. Let's summarize briefly the main advantages of an air cooler over an air conditioner:

Air cooler Wall mounted air conditioning unit
It can only be used to cool the air It can cool the air and also heat it, using the inverter technology
It has two main parts: a fan and a water pump It has four main parts: compressor, condenser, expansion valve and evaporator and works on the refrigeration cycle
It is portable and easy to move from one place to another It is quite bulky and heavy and should be installed on the wall or near a window
It is envirnomentally friendly, as it uses only water to cool the air It works using a chemical refrigerant to cool the air
It produces a flow of wet air It emits dry air
Low energy consumption, as it's not very powerful As a device with a compressor, it uses more energy to function properly
It's only suitable for use in areas with a relatively low humidity rate Works in both humid and dry areas
It's ready to use: just needs to be plugged anf dilled with water It requires installation

Can I use an air cooler during winter?

It sounds illogical at first, but yes: the devices can improve the indoor climate even in winter. Not just our best air cooler can serve as a pure humidifier without cooling. In winter, humidity regularly drops to its lowest point. As a result, skin and mucous membranes dry out faster, which then may lead to itchy skin, brittle lips or a dry throat for instance. The air cooler with water tank is able to humidify the room air when needed and thus contribute to pleasant indoor climate even in winter.
