Was bewirkt ein Brotkasten?
The bambuswald bread box came in a different color (black) than ordered (beige), but that doesn't matter for a test. The look is country house style - enameled metal with subtle decoration, two handles on the side. On top is a bamboo lid that can also be a cutting board. Personally, I wouldn't use that because I have a bread box with visually visible cutting marks on the inside, so I'd rather use an extra bamboo kitchen board ;-) The lid doesn't have a silicone sealing ring, which makes sense because bread can only be stored in one Container that is breathable. I once bought a bread box made entirely of metal - although it had a few air holes in the back, the bread still molded in it. Rolls and bread contain water that needs to be preserved for as long as possible. If bread is stored unprotected, the moisture will escape within a few days and it will become dry. What does a bread bin do? A bread box prevents moisture from escaping too quickly and therefore keeps the bread fresher for longer. A good bread bin extends the shelf life for up to a week. Under no circumstances should bread be left in a plastic bag in the bread bin. It is advisable to repack the sliced bread from the supermarket in a paper bag or at least leave the plastic bag wide open so that moisture cannot collect in it. Bread from the bakery should be left in the bag. The wooden lid and the non-existent seal on the bambuswald bread box offer exactly the breathability that bread needs. The bread keeps very well in it! The box is a bit oversized for a two-person household, but perfect for 3-5 people. I think the company also has smaller bread boxes, so it's worth taking a look if it can be a little smaller. Pretty and functional!
