Nice to have...
I am rating the large 50L version here and have already successfully brewed several brews. First of all: I have been a hobby brewer for about two years and started out with a classic mulled wine kettle. I then looked for something more comfortable and am (currently) quite happy with this device. The 50L does NOT refer to the output volume that can be achieved (as with Speidel, for example)! A total of 50L fit IN the device, but that's it. Boiling hops is then actually not possible without major mess. But first structured in sequence. Recipe programming: The control unit sucks in terms of usability! The part forgets everything as soon as the power is gone, the menu navigation was developed by an intern. Completely complicated and slow in creating the planned recipe. The operating instructions also do not cover all the functions of the control unit. This is definitely frustrating. However, if you have fought your way through it two or three times, you can deal with it and ultimately reach your goal. Since I brew a beer every 6 weeks - if it gets high - I can live with sacrificing a little time and nerves for it. Mashing in & resting: Insert the mash basket (empty) and add water, start the recipe. As soon as the first temperature is reached, the program stops and only continues when you click next. That's great, because you also have to mash in - i.e. do it manually. Incidentally, the malt should be ground very coarsely (like the Speidel master brewer), otherwise the water will not run through and simply flows into the overflow pipe at the top and is sucked off by the pump below without touching the malt... This happens after mashing , which is why I bought this device: automatic deceleration of the locking steps!!! That works great! Countdown only runs when the temperature has been reached and the "boost" can be adjusted. Purpose fulfilled :-) Lautering & Nachguss: After the rest comes the lautering. To do this, the inner malt basket must be pulled out upwards and placed on the soldered feet on the edge of the outer tub. Here comes the big shortcoming of this 50L device: This malt basket is filled with approx. 12 KG of malt which is soaked with water. That leads to a weight of about 40 kg, which has to be moved vertically. There are NO "intermediate feet" to set the mass down halfway. The whole mass is about 80°C hot at the time and steams in your face! This can lead to extremely dangerous situations. In any case, also order leather welding gloves (no grill gloves, they cannot withstand steam). The subsequent pouring that follows must be carried out virtually blindly, since one does not know how many liters are still in the boiler or how much still fits in. You have to do the math beforehand, but don't forget that the malt has also stored water that will later be missing in the vat. Hop boiling & whirlpool: Due to the 3000W, boiling is not an issue and it can be cooked properly. Top! Note: Cook without the lid and DO NOT tumble the pump. For the whirlpool process I would have liked a larger diameter, that would be nice. Nice to have... Cleaning: Not so easy due to the outer tube. Of course, if the pipe gets clogged properly, you have a problem. Otherwise, the device is easy to clean. Conclusion: For me, a device that definitely has weaknesses (especially control unit & lautering) but also simplifies the brewing process nicely. If you compare this device with the top device (Speidel Braumeister 50L) in the category, you simply have to say: For a fraction of the price of the Primus, you get a top price/performance ratio here. If you are not afraid of the money, you should grab the Primus right away. I am satisfied with this device here.
